OVERVIEW
For some, running is just a way to achieve aerobic fitness. While for others, it’s a way of life. For many years now, elite runners have been spending weeks, if not months, at “camps” or locations away from home. The runners are traveling to a higher elevation for a specific kind of training, i.e., High altitude training. This method involves training at higher altitudes, where it’s harder to breathe.
While it might seem unappealing, the strategy has physiological benefits. Exposure to this low-oxygen air, which is also referred to as a state of hypoxia, is a great challenge for the human body. Since the energy of our cells primarily comes from oxygen, the body has to work hard to compensate for the lack of it while under hypoxia. It can improve how your body responds to exercise, and therefore, increase your endurance. Athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and other health-conscious individuals can benefit greatly from training under these ideal conditions. They can make big strides in their physical wellness.
B&C is the first in India to offer this unique program in collaboration with Dr. Sunita Godara, Asian Marathon Champion (1992). We have come up with a high-altitude training program for runners to be conducted in Himachal. Keep reading to know more about it.
WHY YOU SHOULD SIGN UP
Improved endurance: At high altitudes, the air is thinner, which means there is less oxygen available. As a result, the body has to work harder to get enough oxygen to the muscles. This can lead to an increase in the production of red blood cells, which can improve oxygen delivery to the muscles and help runners perform better at high altitudes and at sea levels.
Enhanced speed: Altitude training can also help runners improve their speed, as the lower air resistance at high altitudes can allow runners to cover longer distances more quickly.
Improved running economy: Altitude training can also lead to improvements in the running economy, which refers to the amount of oxygen and energy needed to maintain a given pace. By improving the running economy, runners may be able to run faster with less effort.
Increased strength: Altitude training may also lead to an increase in muscle strength, as the body has to work harder to compensate for the lack of oxygen at high altitudes.
Enhanced recovery: Some runners may also find that they experience improved recovery after altitude training, as the body is better able to remove waste products and repair damaged muscles.
It’s important to note that altitude training can be physically demanding, so it’s important to listen to your body and adjust your training accordingly. It’s also a good idea to consult with a sports medicine professional or exercise physiologist before starting an altitude training program. They can help you develop a training plan that is tailored to your specific needs and goals.
